Want a few tips on how to catch your trophy fish?

With summer in full steam, hopes of catching your trophy fish run strong. Here are a few tips on how to land a big one for your records:

  • If you only have a short amount of time on a fishing trip and you are angling for a record fish, live bait is the way to go. The top two baits that bass prefer most are baitfish and crustaceans. The next in line are salamanders, worms, and leeches.
  • If you are at a lake, you will most likely see an aquatic vegetation known as hydrilla. Bass love to spawn in this vegetation that grows almost like carpet along the top of the lake. Cast your bait into that area but make sure you leave your line slack. You want your live bait to swim and be as active as possible so that it catches the attention of the bass. If your bait goes quiet, it’s most likely hiding in the hydrilla from the larger fish. Every so often, lift your rod in the air to make sure the bait keeps active. Many bass will eat, not because they are hungry, but because an intruder has entered their territory.
