Cup holders in vehicles were initially designed to be used when the car was parked – not while in motion. But, as roads became smoother and transmissions went from manual to automatic, car manufacturers began taking note that it was now possible to enjoy a drink and a snack while driving. But, for many years, the cup holder remained an afterthought. It was not until 1953 that a patent for a cup holder was granted.
Fast forward a few decades and the rise of the cup holder’s importance to consumers has risen to new heights. In 2007, PricewaterhouseCoopers surveyed car owners which revealed that cup holders were more important to them than fuel efficiency.
Last year, Subaru rolled out their Ascent model with nineteen cup holders, all in a vehicle that seats a maximum of eight people. That’s almost 2.5 cup holders per person. There are also high-tech holders that can keep your drinks hot or cold.
Taking the cup holder to a whole new level, BMW has now harnessed gyroscopic technology that will prevent drink spillage while driving. When the cup is placed in the cup holder, it senses when the car turns, and it pushes the liquid the other way so the drink does not spill.
There is an innovative company in the United States that is using the cup holder to attack odor and airborne pollutants. Called the NuVinAir Cyclone, it fits into a cup holder and contains a natural, highly effective compound that has been used to safely treat compromised public buildings and drinking water. The Cyclone expels a dry, hygienic vapor throughout the vehicle’s HVAC system and cabin. However, the Cyclone is not a masking agent or ionizer and leaves behind zero residue. It effectively eliminates odors and restores the vehicle to hygienic efficiency.
