One of the most brilliant lyrics ever written were delivered by a fairly unknown singer song writer at the time named Bob Dylan. Dylan had only been in New York less than a year in 1963 when he was invited onstage at Gerede’s Folk City in Greenwich Village. Claiming to have written the song in under ten minutes, he soon thereafter walked into a studio and recorded the most eloquent protest song that would later turn him into a superstar.
The song, Blowin’ In The Wind, was released on his breakthrough album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan and would become the unofficial anthem of the civil rights movement.
Dylan sang the song throughout his career thousands of times and soon grew weary of singing it in 1964. He decided to keep it out of his repertoire and did so for nearly a decade. In 1971, he was lined up to play at the Concert for Bangladesh. The event was the first-ever benefit of magnitude and featured a supergroup of performers that included George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and the band Badfinger. Harrison asked Dylan if he would play Blowin in the Wind and Dylan snapped, “Are you going to play ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand?’” However, Dylan relented and agreed to play the song and the rest is history. The song profoundly affected his development as a songwriter and also affected the Beatles music tremendously. Their own move from songs like, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” to “A Day in the Life” can be traced directly back to listening to “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan album of 1964.
Dylan and the Beatles changed the musical landscape of the world with their music and music has never been the same since.
