2023 Goal Setting – Matt Golimowski

Happy New Year!

The start of a new year is an excellent time to reflect on our past and think about what we want to accomplish going forward. It’s also a great time to set goals in both our personal and professional lives. A key to achieving our goals is to write them down; however, numerous studies have shown that only three percent of the population set goals, and only about one percent actually write them down.

Did you know you are 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down? Writing your goals down not only forces you to get clear on what, exactly, it is that you want to accomplish, but doing so plays a part in motivating you to complete the tasks necessary for your success.

Said another way….

People who vividly describe or picture their goals are anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to accomplish them successfully than people who don’t.

Several years ago, I discovered a straightforward model to help me accomplish my goals, and I shared and implemented this with my Sales staff all over the country. It is so simple they could keep it in their wallet or pocket or, more recently, store it in their phone so they could review it regularly. Several of them still use this today to set monthly sales goals and say it is a key to their success.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Write down your goal.
  2. Write 3-5 results of achieving your goal.
  3. Write 2 or 3 keys to success. Within each of those, write a couple of behaviors that could lead to failure.
  4. Put it somewhere where you can view it daily.
  5. Tweak it as needed.

Here is a real-life sample I am personally using to lose weight that I have hanging on my bathroom mirror:

Here’s what a few notable people worth listening to have to say about goals:

Tony Robbins: “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”

Albert Einstein: “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.”

Pablo Picasso: “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.”

So, if achieving a smidgen of what some of the most highly successful people in the world have achieved is of interest to you, writing down your goals must become a priority!
