No matter what path of life you are on, you can always use a little fresh air and a fresh perspective from time to time. Taking a road trip can be rejuvenating to your spirit and good for your soul. Each month we will highlight two states with suggestions on the best road trips to take. This month, we feature the great states of Texas and Wisconsin.
Texas:
Many Texans believe their state has it all. It certainly has a wide range of topography and scenic vistas, but the state is so big, you will need to plan your road trip carefully.
Pineywoods Autumn Trail
If you live in the eastern part of Texas, Pineywoods Autumn Trail is the place to see. This 145-mile road trip is a woodlands paradise. Visitors to this trail enjoy zipline adventures, art galleries, fishing, hiking, wineries and stunning views of fall foliage.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Certainly one of the prettiest places to visit in Texas during fall is Palo Duro Canyon State Park. To see the canyon (known as the Grand Canyon of Texas), you’ll need to take Texas State Highway 207. Visitors can experience 30 miles of hiking, biking and horse trails. There is also an outdoor pioneer amphitheater carved out of the natural basin on the canyon. During select months, they have live theater, musicians and concerts for visitors.
Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive
For this trip, you’ll need to make sure your vehicle is in good working order as this is not a quick jaunt. Head south and west to Big Bend National Park where this desert environment offers mountainous landscapes. The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is only 30 miles long but has several gorgeous overlooks and canyons. One canyon, the Santa Elena Canyon has cliffs that rise 1,500 feet above the Rio Grande River.
Wisconsin:
With over 16 million acres of forests, the state comes alive with brilliantly colored foliage each fall. Wisconsin lovers take to the scenic Highway 60 and travel 100 miles along the Lower Wisconsin River.
Taliesin, Spring Green
Art enthusiasts flock to Spring Green where famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright built his beloved Taliesin. The site of several fires (and the murder of his lover and her children), Wright tirelessly rebuilt and expanded this estate right up to his final years.
Highway 57/42
Most everyone has heard about Door County, but it transcends its natural beauty in the fall with stunning foliage. Take Highways 42 and 57 for 66 miles to see the Door Peninsula. Start off at Sturgeon Bay and travel along the eastern side of the peninsula to Northport. Then, travel south on highway 42 to see the sights of the bayside of Door County. It’s a trip you will never forget.
Highway 35
The most well-known highway for fall road trips is known as the Great River Road, or Highway 35. For 250 miles, travelers can ooh and ahh through 33 of the most charming towns Wisconsin has to offer. As you near the final and most southern stretch of the Great River Road, take time to explore Wyalusing State Park and take in its natural beauty.
